How is the average in the Jira Cloud "Average Time in Status" gadget calculated?

Devlend Maul September 20, 2023

When using the Average Time in Status gadget in dashboards for a couple resolved issues, it appears the average is higher in the chart vs what I would expect when calculating using the transitions log in the Activity section. For example: the chart states an average of 8.523 days but when I add up the time in status using the transitions log and divide by the number of issues I get 7.272. Is there something I'm missing? How is the plot point average calculated?

Hi @Devlend Maul

That is an excellent question as there is little current documentation on this gadget.  And there are several open/timed-out defects on the accuracy of this gadget:

My recommendation is to first confirm your filter is only including resolved issues of expected issue types, so you are comparing like things.

If you are still seeing differences consider contacting Atlassian Support here and ask them to offer ideas: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/

Once you hear back from them, please post what you learn to benefit the community.  Thanks!

In the meantime, perhaps check if you have any installed marketplace addon gadgets to use as they may have more accurate results.

Kind regards,
Bill
