How is the Opportunity issue type being used by teams?

Hello! Do any of your teams use the Jira Issue Type, Opportunity? I am supporting a Product Manager and he wants to explore this Issue Type - creating an 'Opportunity' backlog. I'd love to learn how the issue type is being used by teams. Thank you for sharing your insights.

Hello, Is this Jira software project or you are using different project template ?

By default Jira software projects will have following issue types. 

• Epic
• Story
• Task
• Bug
• Sub-task

This could be a customer issue type created in your instance as well.

We are not using Jira Cloud.  The 'Opportunity' issue type is available and just needs to be enabled within our Jira project by our Tools team.

What I was hoping to learn from this community is how the Opportunity issue type is being used by teams.

Is it being used during the Product/Feature evaluation/vetting process?

And then once it's determined a Product or Product feature will be created... are Opportunities then converted to Initiatives or Epics for development teams?  Or  are the Opportunities simply linked to Initiatives or Epics if development work will proceed?

You have mentioned "We are not using Jira Cloud.". Is this Jira server version ?

Please go to Settings >> Issues >> Issue type hierarchy and attach a screen shot for reference, this should help understand your configuration.
