I'm brand new to Jira. I'm looking to create a generic project so I can keep track of my side hustle and work in sprints. I created a new project, and it asked me if it was in HR. It's not, but I didn't realize what happened until it's too late. Now I have categories like Candidates and Interviews. How do I change this to a generic project that I can customize? Do I have to create a new project from scratch? Thanks for any help!

You can do a lot of work on re-configuring any project created from a template, converting them from one shape to another, but only really within the application that the project is for. If, for example, a project is a Jira Software project, you can re-configure it to be Scrum, Kanban, or anything else within Software, but you won't be able to convert it to a JSM helpdesk type project (completely, you can get close)
You may well be better off creating a new project, in the application you really wanted to use, and with a template that suits better than HR.
Moving issues from one project to another is often a lot easier than trying to reshape projects that don't fit (certainly when you are moving between applications)
Thank you!!! I did, I created a new project and deleted the old one. But how do you know if it's a Jira software project or just a project? I wouldn't mind switching it to scrum if possible, the only thing missing is sprints. I'm accountable to myself, so it's all in what I do, but sprints are more likely to keep me on track.

Easiest thing to do is look in the list of projects - the list has a column that will contain Software, Business, Service Management (despite the drop-down filter saying Service Desk), or Product Discovery.
Business means "Jira Work Management".
The field will also contain Team or Company managed (some projects may not display that - they were created at a time when Service Management did not have team-managed projects, so you'll find they are Company-managed. Also JPD doesn't have a management type, but I'm not sure whether to accuse it of being Team or Company, it is done differently again)

Super thanks! I'm mainly testing this out for myself, a team of one for now so to speak, to encourage productivity and work in sprints. I may add another person as an accountability buddy or partner, if I'm finding it worthwhile.

If you want to work in sprints, you should look first to create Jira Software projects - they support Scrum automatically, without needing any reconfiguration.
