How do I turn off Story Points as a required field when new issue is created.

I like to point issues when I commit to a sprint plan and would like to wait on assigning a story point for a particular issue until that time. It seems the 'Story Point Estimate' field is locked and I cannot control this required field. Is there another way to turn it off?

Hello @Alec Brewster

What do you mean by the field is 'locked'?:

  1. You cannot change the field's value when creating the issue (the value is 'locked')
  2. You must provide a value for the field when creating the issue (you are 'locked out' of not providing a value)

By default, providing a value for the Story Points field is not required when creating Stories, as that is the normal Agile behaviour of setting Story Points values during backlog grooming or Sprint planning. That means that someone at your company has specifically configured that field on that project to behave in the way you are experiencing.

Speak to the project admin, as changing it for you changes it for everyone in the project.

Thanks David, I am the admin and cannot figure out where to go to unlock that value. It is the field called 'Story Point Estimate'. Any ideas?Screen Shot 2023-10-23 at 1.21.54 PM.png

Ahhh, the Story Points field and the Story Point Estimate field are totally different things and available under different circumstances depending on whether you're in a Company Managed project or a Team Managed (formerly called 'NexGen') project.

Read this article on the history of those two fields and the use of the Story Point Estimate field in Team Managed projects.

Cheers,
