How do I know if a Jira project is scrum or kanban?

Katie Silvester July 2, 2024

I want to create a new Jira project in the same format as other other Jira projects I use at my organisation. Not sure whether this is scrum or kanban. Previous answers to similar questions on here aren't helping me, nothing on any of the projects I already use mention kanban or scrum. For 'type', they just say 'Company managed software'.

Any help gratefully received!

Hi @Katie Silvester Welcome to the Atlassian community.

1. The basic difference is scrum projects have a Active sprints in the board sidebar and Kanban projects not. please check the attached screenshots.

2. You can verify this by click on the boards if the boards belong to that projects have active sprints then it is scrum project and it not then it is Kanban project. here you can view the boards from other projects as well, so check only the board belong to the current project to confirm.

3. Scrum projects and Kanban projects have different reports available so you can check that as well if board is scrum or Kanban, scrum projects have more reports available compare to Kanban board some of them are as shown in the attached screenshot.

But remember that scrum projects can have Kanban boards and kanban boards can have scrum boards as well. so on project level there is no such differentiation if the project is Kanban or Scrum as while creating a project users can choose any template (Kanban or Scrum) so the first board created after the project is created is based on what template you selected and later you can create Kanban board in Scrum project or Scrum board in Kanban project and you can check the above points to find the board type.

Hope this will help.

Thank you! The problem I have is that our IT dept set up new Jira projects for us and we just have a binary choice in the form we fill in: 'Scrum' or 'Kanban'. But it's really useful to see all these options above.

Hi @Katie Silvester ,

I see your frustration, when you choose scrum or kanban during project creation it's not really creating different kinds of projects. They are all software projects with a slightly  different underlying workflows and screens/fields needed to support the different work methodologies.

If I were you I would look into the existing projects you want to copy the set up from. See what board is connected to the projects. If the board contains a possibility to create a sprint, then it's using the Scrum template, if no they are using the Kanban template.

Tip: During the project creation wizard you will be allowed to choose to use the same config as an existing project. First you choose software project, then you choose the template, then you choose if it's Team vs Company managed, then this screen appears.

If choosing to share, then the config will not be taken from the template, it will be the same as for the existing project.

Thanks for your response. Our IT team set up new projects for us, so I've put as part of my request that I don't know what type it should be, but I've mentioned another Jira project that I want it to mirror. Hopefully that will do!

Yes, They should definitely be enough for them to help you with creating a new project.
