How can I move/copy a project from one JIRA account to a different JIRA account?

Chris Fox March 14, 2023

We have 2 Atlassian company accounts (one for the whole business, and one managed by a subsidiary) and I need to move/copy a JIRA Software project from the subsidiary-managed account into the company-managed account. Could someone explain how I can do this?

FYI, I am an Admin of the company-managed account, but not the subsidiary-managed account (where the project currently sits).

Thanks

Hi @Chris Fox , welcome to the community and thanks for your question.

I have understood the situation you are describing is this -

Your company have two different Atlassian cloud organizations. You want to move a project from one organization to another one?

In the cloud, it is not so simple to export and import a project as it was in the self-hosted setting. However, I think you might be able to achieve a similar result using the cloud migration assistant.

Cloud-to-cloud migration | Atlassian Support

You can access the migration options here, in the system administration menu in system settings

From here, you could create a migration to move the single project from one organization to another, but you will need to have the highest level of permission in both organizations to do this, or ask someone to help you who does.

Basically, using the migration tool, you will need to specify the source organization / Jira site and then the destination organization / site where you want to move the project, and then just set the migration off running, which, depending on the number of issues, might take a while.

Please give us your feedback if you think this approach is feasible. Also, I would be happy to read other people's suggestions as I would imagine this is quite a common use case.

Cheers

Hi Val,

Thanks for your reply. I'll work through it and let you know how I go.

Hey Val,

So it turns out that your account needs to be Org Admin in both accounts (which mine wasn't (I was Site Admin), but I found someone who was), and additionally, at this point, you can only migrate "company-managed" software projects using the Cloud Migration tool. The project I am trying to migrate is a Team-managed software project. Someone has suggested that I could use Backbone to sync data between 2 projects as a way of getting data transferred. I'll look into this.

Thanks again for your suggestion!

@Chris Fox, I'm part of the Backbone team. With Backbone, you're able to copy the issue data. For the project data, you'd need to manually set it up on the other side.

Let our support team know if you need help.

Hey @Chris Fox, I have a similar request to migrate from a Jira environment owned by an external partner.  Wondering if you were able to successfully migrate your data. Would love to know how you did it.

Thanks.

Hey @Cheron Gilchrist we ended up abandoning the move. The Cloud-to-Cloud function that Val mentioned in the accepted answer looked like it would work, but as mentioned it only works for Company-managed projects, and ours was Team-managed. Due to the fact that the required people could still access the project in the other Org (we are the parent company, and our subsidiary run their own Org which got this project created in it incorrectly. Our staff can still access the project in the sub's Org) we decided some of the more manual methods (export/import, Backbone etc.) weren't worth the amount of work after the fact re-allocating issues etc. so we gave up.

Sorry I didn't have anything more useful to add. :-)
