How can I limit what projects users can access/see?

Matthew Knab November 25, 2024

In our data center environment, we have several projects in Jira that are used by a variety of departments. We also have Jira's Service management suite tied to one of these projects (called SDP) and it has become a problem where many users of Jira decide to open up their tickets in other projects, rather than SDP (despite all the constant reminders and trainings I provide).

My question is if there is a good way to limit what most users of Jira can see project wise? I would like most to see just the SDP project, and then for those who need to see the other projects can access their specific ones as well. What would be the best way to accomplish this? Thanks!

Hello @Matthew Knab

In order to have specific users be able to create tickets only on specific projects, the most natural way to do it is to adjust the permissions schemas and make use of groups/project roles.

For SDP, you assign a permissions schema where you grant "Create issues" to a group/role containing these users.

Where you don't want these users to create tickets(e.g for project=SOFT), you set a permission schema where "Create issues" is not granted to a group/role containing these users but only to those who needs this permission.

Details on how to edit/setup permissions schemas could be found in this page: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/managing-project-permissions-938847145.html

Hope it helps!

Kind regards.
