Having a Jira automation rule trigger from another rule not working

jnijjar April 13, 2020

Hello,

I am encountering an issue where one rule executes but the second rule will not execute based off the changes made in the first rule. Here are the rules in order:

This rule exists so epics are automatically updated once work has begun for it. The following rule I want to trigger based off the epic being transitioned from the above rule. The rule for that is as follows:

Screen Shot 2020-04-13 at 8.19.14 PM.pngThis is so some necessary tasks that QA has to perform for each epic are not forgotten about and must be actioned on at the beginning, whether work is done or not.

The issue is that the second rule is only registering the transition of a story and not the epic that is being transitioned by rule 1 executing. This then causes rule 2 to not update any of the QA tasks based off the epic transitioning into an "in development" state because the audit log only shows the story transitioning and not the epic.

If anyone has a potential solution or explanation as to why this is happening that would be great thank you!

Hi @jnijjar,

Have you checked the "Allow rule trigger" box?

Hope this helps,

Hey!

Thank you for getting back to me. So now the rule is executing but unfortunately the tasks are still not being updated. I set the branch rule to be "stories and other issues in epic" and when the second rule executes, it only registers the story within the epic and not the tasks.

The branch rule does state "other issues in an epic if an epic triggered this rule" so I am curious why they are not updating.

Hi @jnijjar,

Have you checked your tasks have Component = Automation? You can look and the rule audit log to understand what's happening.

Just as an update:

I was able to get this to work by having it trigger off other issues and had to make changes to the workflow since there was not a transition from one status to another for the tasks. Everything works as intended now
