While making the below API call, I am still not able to get names of custom fields in the returned json. I read adding expand=names would do the trick but I do not see any change in results. Please help

Can you show us what result do you have. I tried the query below and this is working fine.
rest/api/2/search?jql=project=AAA&expand=names
Ah ok! I was expecting the fields to have their names instead. Is there no way to do that?

You don't want to have the customfield id and the name ? You just need the name ?
I'm afraid that you will need to do it with a script to be able to extract only the name
