For a Kanban board, how to I display subtasks on the Kanban view, but not backlog view?

Christi Heatherly November 21, 2024

We have a Kanban team that is using sub-tasks.  We want these to show in our Kanban view, but NOT in the backlog view.

Within the Kanban view, we can set the swimlanes to be by issue, and that keeps things manageable.

However, having them in the To Do space on the backlog view is hiding the actual issues / work we need to organize.

Does anyone have a way to keep the sub-tasks from showing in the backlog while still available in the dev's Kanban view?  I've only been able to get it to be an all or nothing situation.  For the short term, I have a quick filter for the team, but would love a better overall solution.

Hello @Christi Heatherly

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

You can add a Quick/Custom Filter to your board to hide the subtasks. You could activate the filter when viewing the Backlog, and deactivate the filter when viewing the board.

I apologize. I overlooked that you said you already have a Quick Filter in place.

I have not found any configuration item native to Jira that would enable you to exclude subtasks, or "lock" a subtask hiding filter, on the Backlog view, while keeping the subtasks displayed on the board view.

I have not found any change request for that either.

I recommend that you reach out to Atlassian directly through a support case to see if a support engineer can find such a request or open one for you.

Thank you - That is a good idea.  I'll reach out to them.

Hello, Good day. As we active backlog in Kanban board by adding a status to the backlog. If we have the sub-task in the given status, then it will show up in backlog, applying kanban board  sub-filter will hide subtask from board as well. Thanks

Hi - in the details, I shared we have that in place.  I want a longer term solution.  Having to expose the quick filters and then select this one from the list is ok for the short term, but those extra clicks will add up.

Is there a way to do this within the settings?  Something that has the board do this automatically?  Maybe a future feature for Kanban where I can hide them from the backlog view?  (Kind of like what is given for epics)
