I have an Epic that exists: Customer Master Sync
I can see a related task on the Backlog
However when I search, I cannot find this epic (or some others)
I confirmed the epic is not "Done"

What is the Filter used by the board to select the issues to display?
Is the missing Epic within the scope of that filter? The board will show cards only for the issues that are within the scope of its filter. But a child issue may show its parent Epic within the child card, even if the Epic is not within the scope of the board filter.
Looks like that was it--- the filter had an assignee filter that did not match the epic
