Epic nickname got replaced by epic summary (title) in backlog and boards

An epic has a summary (a title) but also has a nickname (a short text).

Usually in backlogs and boards, on cards and backlog items, jira shows the nickname and not the title. 

Recently on my cloud jira, jira started displaying titles instead of nicknames and now I cannot easily identify to which epic a backlog item or a backlog card belongs. 

Can anyone explain why this change was rolled out? how can i fix it?

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Atlassian is deprecating the use of the Epic Name field (what you called the nickname) in Jira Cloud because it was used only in Company Managed projects. This resulted in an inconsistency compared to Epic issues in Team Managed projects.

Atlassian has been planning and rolling out multiple changes related to Epics to get to a state where Epics in Team Managed and Company Managed projects are handled and presented the same way. You can find more information about that in the following articles.
