Delivery ticket not showing as linked to Idea once created from JPD

When in Product Discovery, I can create a Delivery Ticket successfully in Jira Software; however, the delivery ticket does not appear as linked to the idea nor does it show up in the Delivery Status tab.  The ticket has to be manually added to the idea.

Is an automation rule needed to automatically link the delivery ticket to the idea? If so, can I get some assistance with this rule?  I have tried an Issue Create rule but can't seem to get it to work.

Hi @Nate Tarantino -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Would you please describe the steps you are following when the newly created issue is not linked?

When I follow these steps, it does link to the idea:

  • while in a JPD project, select an Idea on a view (e.g., roadmap)
  • from the idea on the right side of the page, select the Delivery tab
  • select Create a delivery ticket
  • select the Project, Issue Type, and enter a Summary
  • select the Create button
  • note the issue is created, and now appears in the Delivery tab as linked to the Idea

The one reason I could imagine this not working is when someone does not have Creator permissions, as I believe they cannot edit the ticket to link the issue.

Kind regards,
Bill

Thanks @Bill Sheboy

We employ a similar workflow with the only difference being there was a required field in Jira that needed to be populated before the delivery ticket would be issued by JPD.  It appears this requirement might have been the root cause of the issue since the delivery ticket now successfully links to the idea with that requirement removed.

Hello - Our team seems to still be facing this issue as well. For example, one of our product managers took the following actions:

  1. Went to the 'Delivery' tab on a JPD Idea
  2. Clicked 'Create a delivery ticket'
  3. Entered text, clicked 'Create' Result: A window opened
  4. Clicked 'Show Fields' and selected the two required fields for that project that did not default into the view. Result: those fields added to window
  5. Added the appropriate content to those to fields and clicked 'Create' Result: a ticket was created, however the ticket was not automatically linked as a delivery ticket to the idea. The user had to manually do this afterwards. This doesn't seem like expected behavior.

Hi @Levi Palmer

First thing: as this is an older thread, I recommend creating a new question and perhaps linking back to this one.  That will ensure the maximum number of people see it to offer suggestions.

Back to your question...

If you read through the other posts in this thread, you will find this symptom can happen when the person adding the "delivery ticket" from the JPD Idea does not have the "Creator" permission to modify the Idea (and so the linkage cannot succeed).  Did you check their permissions?

Kind regards,
Bill

@Bill Sheboy as Jira guru ... :) is there a way to automatically link the delivery ticket at Idea creation?
ie i have an automation in place that when an epic is created in Jira, it automatically clone as an idea on the jira product discovery. How can i take it further to link that epic in the delivery tab of my (cloned) idea?

Hi @lila

This is similar to the other scenarios, and the link direction is just reversed:

Epic --- implements ---> Idea

Because a rule like this is updating both issues, it will need to be multiple-project in scope.  Your Jira Site Admin will need to help configure such a rule.

Your rule could look like this (plus the additions in bold):

  • trigger: Issue Created
  • action: Re-fetch Issue (The issue created trigger can fire so quickly that some data may not be available to the rule yet.  The fix is to always add the re-fetch issue action after this trigger.)
  • issue fields condition: issue type equals Epic
  • action: Clone Issue, to create the Idea in the JPD project
  • action: Link Issue (This updates the trigger issue.)
    • type: implements
    • issue: most recently created issue

Kind regards,
Bill
