Hi all,
I have a question regarding domain claiming.
We are currently looking into claiming our domain. The main reason for this is that we want to transition all our Trello projects and users into Jira. We currently have around 500 users in Jira and have just acquired the Premium version of Jira (Cloud) and the Standard version of Confluence. I know for a fact that all the teams using Trello are on the free version.
That's where the issue lies—since I can't export data from a free Trello version, and I'm not able to find any Trello products in our Atlassian instance. The problem is that we have a separate Atlassian instance for our organization, which also uses Jira, Confluence, Trello, and more.
What will happen to that instance if we go ahead and claim our domain in my current instance? I've read a lot about the possible outcomes, but has anyone tried this before and can help me decide whether or not we should claim our domain?
Both instances use our company domain—one is for our eCommerce team, while the other is a mix of different departments. Ideally, I would like to claim our domain without merging the two instances, as they are meant to remain separate.
I hope this makes sense. Otherwise, let me know, and I'll elaborate further.
Thanks in advance!
Best regards
Simon
Hi Simon,
To confirm you should be able to claim the same domain across multiple Atlassian sites (https://support.atlassian.com/user-management/docs/verify-a-domain-to-manage-accounts/ see: Another organization already verified the domain). However, you may have to be careful around automatically claiming users from that domain is you have multiple sites as to not inadvertently claim users that should be claimed on the eCommerce site claimed on the mixed site and vice versa.
As far as I am aware Trello works a little differently to Jira and Confluence as it is not "site" based and therefore the data actually travels with the user account and not the site. Therefore, if you were to claim the users they should retain access to their own boards and they would then benefit from the extra features available on the Trello subscription for that site (provided they are licensed).
I would also be inclined to reach out to Atlassian premium support which is included in your Jira premium plan to ask if they have any guidance for performing the migration from Trello to Jira. They may also be able to help by providing a temporary licence for Trello to allow you and your users to migrate across to Jira.
Furthermore, I think it is helpful to mention that in the long term Atlassian are working to consolidate more and more of their tools ecosystem into the Atlassian Admin portal which at some point I would assume will include Trello, although I am aware that this is not helpful in the short term.
Hope this helps,
Tom
