Capacity view for resource allocation

Hi community,

Recently, I'm trying to make a plan focus on resource management/planning.

I have created 3 teams in Plan which are all Kanban team, estimated by days.

And I assign stories to these teams with original estimates values.

In the capacity view, I can see that some of the stories allocated days based on the team capacity and others are not.

In below example, my story has original estimates as 15 days and team capacity is 10 days per week. So, it allocates 10 days for the first week and 5 days for the following week.

Another story has original estimates 20 days and team capacity is 10 days per week. It allocates 5 days in the first 2 weeks and 10 days in the 3rd week. days allocated in a different way.png

I don't know what is the reason behind this. Please help me on this. Thank you!

Hi @yimeng

This is because of the dates set on the issues, in combination with the tram capacity.

So if you have multiple issues with a start date in a certain week, all issues with that start date are taken into account, based on the team capacity estimations are divided over the weeks where capacity is available.

Hi @Marc - Devoteam

Thanks for the reply.

I think you're right that multiple issues whose start dates are in a given week will be considered together in the resource capacity calculation.

However, I still don't quite understand how Atlassian defines the resource allocation rules.

To make it simple, I create a testing example.

1. A team with capacity of 120 hours/week.

2. 3 stories in the plan. And the estimates(d) value for them are set as below.

  1. Story 1 -- Estimates(d) is 4
  2. Story 2 --Estimates(d) is 10
  3. Story 3 -- Estimates(d) is 2

So, there are 16 days workload for the week. Naturally, I will assume the capacity will be allocated and try to finish these stories ASAP. Since the total workload (16 days) is greater than team capacity (15 days), my assumption is that the resource will be allocated as much as it can to these 3 stories, which is 4 for story 1, 2 for story 3, and 9 for story 2 since that's all the remaining hours for the week for the team.

Actually, Jira plan (a.k.a advanced roadmap) gives a different solution.

It allocate 4 days for story 1, 2 days for story 2, and 5.5 days for story 3. Please refer to screenshot below.

And the remaining 4.5 days was assigned in the following week. I don't quite understand why Jira plan allocates resource in this way. Your thoughts?

Below is a screenshot of the Jira plan for this case.

Hi @yimeng

It seems there is other work planned in this week, based on start date.

Or is there based on rank other work on the board(s) of the projects in between the issues.

What are the sources of your plan and hwat is the source of the team in the plan?
