Cancelled or Canceled?

Alex Senyo February 27, 2024

Ok folks, I have a weird one that is more so a pet peeve than anything else.

Does anyone know how to update/change the different Status labels and why I would have some that are "Cancelled" and others are "Canceled?"

Where do I go to make it so one is being used across my entire project? All of the results I've found from Google searches come back to the change the status, select the drop down or drag it to the new column on your Kanban.

Thanks!

Hi @Alex Senyo ~ yup.  seen this one!  Americans typically use "canceled" (one l), while "cancelled" (two l's) is preferred in British English and other dialects. To clarify, these are "statuses" and not "labels", correct?  I'm going off the assumption that these are statuses, based on your screenshot.

It may be that you had 2 different admins creating workflows that used a Canceled status but used their "preferred" spelling.

Before changing this, inform your user community.  Most likely, each of those status values are being used in filters, dashboards, reports that will be affected if you change them.  There could also be automation rules or scripts that use this too that could potentially be affected.  If you do proceed to change it, you will want to update your workflows to use the preferred spelling which will prompt a change to existing issues with the old spelling.  Not sure if saving the workflow automatically updates any archived issue but my guess is that it doesn't.  Probably won't make a difference but you should have a look at that too.

Yep, they are statuses and I thought of this exact issue right after I posted because I found an issue where the overall status has one L, like the child tasks do.

As George Costanza once said: "Why must there always be a problem?"

@Alex Senyo  This glitch happens when the Default Jira Language is English US, and the user language is English UK.
1. Eithier go to https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/account-preferences?ref=jira&src=personalsettings and change user language to English US, and you will see CANCELED everywhere
2.Or Rename Status in your system  to CANCELLED,  and leave English UK as your user language, and you will see CANCELLED everywhere
