Unfortunately, I'm in the same camp as many other JIRA users out there, in that I need different priorities for different projects (https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-3821) . We're tracking all types of work in JIRA, not just bugs, and there is no single list of priorities that make sense for all.

As a result, I'm considering the work around described by Atlassian in the feature request above: using custom fields for priorities. However, I'd like to be able to show an icon indicating the issue's priority, like I can with the default priority field. This icon shows both on the view screen for the issue, and on the "card" on the rapid board. This is a really helpful at-a-glance way to identify urgent issues. Can I wire this up to a custom field (or, rather, many custom fields, one for each project)?

You could always develop ay new custom field type with a custom renderer that displayed an image associated with the value but I dont think it would work very well with green hopper and the card views, you would still have the normal priority field. What I usually do with a new jira install is to rename the priorities to something generic. The defaults are too software specific and I do a Lot of process modelling in jira. That way each project can make it's own interpretation of the value. If the images are the problem you could always over write them.

Additionally in Greenhopper what we used to get the attention was to use the Impediment feature, which shows up a warning icon on top of the Card for everyone to see. And also a filter subscription for people to get notified about issues have impediments marked by the teams.
