Best Practice Programme management with Advanced Roadmaps

Tanya Fraser May 16, 2024

I am looking for suggestions and advice.

We have a team of 25, working on 3-4 projects/products at any one time,  that last 3-9 months each.

Teams comprised of a discipline that need to work alongside each other (to keep consistency), even if not in the same project;

Projects and Products that last a minimum of three months and involve members of each discipline team, normally dedicated for that period.

The challenge is:

  • to have visibility at the Programme/ portfolio/ project level of the expected project duration, how we are travelling against milestones and deliverable, and the ability to schedule and plan;
  • for the team leads to have visibility at the Team discipline level of what is coming up each quarter across their team for resourcing,  and each sprint;
  • and the individuals to be clear at task level what they need to do.

We run time boxed sprints of two weeks and over the past 3 years have tried variation iterations: we have tried Team based sprints and project based sprints. We have tried projects on a kanban, with teams in a sprint. We have tried using Big Picture.

So, all the normal stuff. Just looking for some best practice (given the updates in Jira over the past 12 months!!)
