We had 200+ labels for Project Automation last week and this week they're simply gone at the project and global level. We haven't upgraded our instance. Any ideas on what happened and/or how to recover the labels?

Hi @Mathew Lederman

I checked the public backlog and release notes and did not see this symptom noted.  You may want to work with your Jira admin to check with the Atlassian support team on this one: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/

Kind regards,
Bill

@Bill Sheboy appreciate the direction. I am the admin, so I'll reach out to Atlassian support. Just wasn't sure if anybody here had run into the issue before.

Thanks,

Mathew

@Mathew Lederman The same problem is seen in our Jira DC, the automation labels disappeared all of a sudden. May I know what Atlassian said?

@Eshwar Palem Atlassian claimed that a user was deleting the labels through the API, though the user had no knowledge or awareness of doing so. Unfortunately the labels are at the global perspective and don't respect project-permissions, so any user can make changes to automation labels in any project.

Thank you for responding, in our case a user removed the label from their project not knowing that it would be removed globally(including the project where it was created/used).

Looks like the label deletion should be restricted to Jira admins or labels should be project-specific. Atlassian support told us that they will create a feature request(which should be a bug IMO) and their feature requests will never have an ETA, so no one knows when this will be fixed.

@Eshwar Palem I agree with you 100%; deleting labels should require admin permissions. Can you share the feature request created so I can follow along for an update in 10 years?

Eshwar Palem December 9, 2024

The support mentioned it as a feature request but it was raised as a bug, here is the link https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JIRAAUTOSERVER-1001

Hi @karim -Atlassway-

This question is about the labels for automation rules, not issue labels.

Kind regards,
Bill

@karim -Atlassway-  And just to add, the question is for Data Center, which your app is not supporting.
