Is it possible to add check boxes in a typing field of a Jira issue. For example, my team wants to be able to have check boxes within the description of an Issue to keep track of the small items they need to complete to complete that issue.

I do not think it is possible and it would be amazing to add as a feature!

Hi @Rachael Humphries

You can read about how to add this option in this discussion https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/How-to-create-checklist-in-task-description/qaq-p/728491

As for my team, we have recently begun to use one app from the marketplace.

I mean for this purpose "Sub-Tasks" are best.

You can create sub-tasks and assign to individual users to fullfil parent.

On the parent Workflow select a transition to DONE or RESOVED or CLOSES (Green Color)

  1. Select a transition (e.g. Resolve) and click Conditions.
  2. Click Add condition.
  3. Select the Sub-task Blocking Condition and click Add.
  4. Select the sub-task statuses (e.g. Done, Resolved) and click Add

Please check this case too

In my mind, these are different use cases.

Subtasks are full jira items that can be individually assigned, moved around the board, etc.

Checkboxes are much more ad hoc, lightweight, they don't clutter the board. This is great feature in Trello and I miss it whenever I use Jira
