Speed up the way you create tasks with the help of Confluence

Hi everyone,

I’m Marie, a Product Manager focused on integrations and workflows between Confluence and Jira. At Team ‘24 Europe, we introduced a major update to the Jira issue creation workflow in Confluence, making the transition from planning to execution smoother and more efficient than ever.

Teams rely on Confluence to document knowledge, craft project plans and requirements docs, and serve as their single source of truth as they collaborate. While Confluence is an exceptional tool for these purposes, what truly elevates it are its integrations with Jira (and yes, I might be a little biased). These integrations take Confluence beyond your standard knowledge management tool by directly connecting it to the work you’re tracking in Jira – speeding up your workflows in ways that other documentation tools can’t.

Now, transforming Confluence content, like project plans or action items from your meeting notes, into actionable tasks in Jira is faster and easier than before, with a modernized interface and expanded functionality. Simply, highlight the text you want to turn into tasks and instantly create trackable work items in Jira without ever switching between tabs or tools.

Here’s everything you need to know about how this new feature will help you work more effectively.

What’s new and improved

A modern experience

We’ve completely redesigned the task creation interface in Confluence, making it more intuitive, reliable, and consistent to the issue creation experience in Jira. After highlighting text in Confluence and selecting the + Jira issue button, you’ll now retain full context of your Confluence page as you create Jira issues. No more toggling between tabs or windows or setting up side-by-side screens – everything you need to create and track your work remains in view.

AI-powered issue creation

Say goodbye to manual data entry with the help of AI. We’ve added new functionality, using Atlassian Intelligence, to help speed up the process of creating Jira tasks. Now, once you highlight your text in a Confluence page, simply select Create with Atlassian Intelligence and let AI do the work. This feature takes into consideration the text you’ve highlighted, along with the context of your entire Confluence page, and quickly generates a comprehensive summary and description for your Jira tasks.

Note: In order to create tasks with Atlassian Intelligence, you'll need to have Confluence Premium+ and Atlassian Intelligence enabled for Confluence.

Benefits to your workflow

These new updates are more than just a facelift. They’re designed to improve your workflows in tangible ways:

  • Reduce context switching: One of the biggest challenges of moving from planning to managing work is switching between tools, tabs and browsers. With this workflow, you no longer need to jump back and forth. Create tasks directly from your project plans in Confluence in a way that looks and feels familiar to how you work in Jira.

  • Save time with AI: Manually copy and pasting and creating tasks from scratch is a thing of the past. Atlassian Intelligence-powered task creation automates the generation of issue details, reducing the steps you have to take to create a Jira issue.

  • Enhance collaboration within your teams: Integrations between Confluence and Jira help teams stay aligned as they transition from planning in Confluence to executing plans in Jira. Tasks created in Confluence remain linked to their respective pages and Confluence pages remain linked in Jira tasks, ensuring full alignment across teams and projects.

Share your thoughts

We’re excited to hear what you think about this update and its impact on your workflows. Try it today and drop us a comment to let us know what you think. Stay tuned for more updates to this workflow… including bulk issue creation (coming soon!).

This feature is in open beta, so all customers not in bundles release tracks should have access. However, if your team uses bundled release tracks, you won't see the new experience yet.

This is a game changer for our Marketing team! Their plans are in Confluence and they don't want to go to Jira to create tickets.

My question is will this be available for the Standard plan or get taken away and be a premium-only feature?

Hey @Kerrie Gottschalk - love to hear it! We built this with teams like Marketing in mind, so folks can stay in their preferred tool, and make sure work gets moved to Jira seamlessly when it needs to.

Today, all Atlassian Intelligence features are only available on Premium and Enterprise plans. However, your Marketing team can still take advantage of the updated task creation from text highlight flow across any Confluence plan!

Awesome for Cloud!

I did it the old way by using the Atlassian JIRA API and creating a link (only for DC - Data Center):

<a href="[Jira BASE URL]/secure/CreateIssueDetails!init.jspa?[ARGUMENTS]">[DESCRIPTION]</a>

I wrote a user macro that the user can edit e.g. the description.

This was very useful for or business analysts who wanted templates for a user story / bug and finding where they can edit the description by their own.

If anyone is interested -> Shall I start a community event about How to create a jira template in confluence DC?

Cheers
Tobias

@Tobias C_ Really digging the innovation workaround--you used static, stable tools/methods too, so I think this'll have some longevity. For clarity, I know Trello users were venting after an ID# change, I believe, broke their automations. I hope it's alright if I ask:

Do you or Atlassian DC Community innovate solutions/walkarounds like this solo?

Does the Atlassian DC user Community reposit workarounds, templates, widgets, etc. anywhere? Like, is there a DC Community Group that links a centrally accessible Confluence with similar fixits like yours above?

I have ulterior motives: I use API and Forge to fill feature gaps since I'm a Free Tier user. I was wanting to snoop templates or customizations you were willing to share (as long as not proprietary, of course!). I want to bridge Free/Standard Plan user's features gap like you did here for DC.
