New feature: Sync Jira issues in Trello

Trello just introduced a new feature, and if you're wondering why I'm writing about it over here, it's because this one is all about JIRA ✨

I made this video explaining how it works, but keep reading for screenshots and step by step guide to try it out.

If you've ever wanted to combine Trello and Jira, or you're looking for a better way to keep track of your Jira issues, say hello to Jira lists in Trello.

This is being rolled out slowly, so if you don't have access yet, it's coming soon!!

1. Create a board, or go to one you already use. Click "Add another list", and choose Add from, then pick Jira.

2. Set your criteria for which Jira issues you want to sync in Trello

You can choose the ones you want based on assignee, project, issue, type, status, and more! If you're a JQL wizard, you can get as specific as you want.

3. View your Jira issues in your smart list.

New issues will be added as they meet the criteria, but you may need to refresh the board if you're currently in the board and a new issue is added in Jira.

4. Move the issues to other lists in the board.

Trello creates a copy, there's a technical reason for this but you can click the filter icon on the Jira list to hide copied cards to keep it cleaner.

5. Interact with Jira issues without leaving Trello!

You can change the status without even opening the card—just click the status on the front of the card and choose the status. Or you can click Open Preview to view the Jira issue inside of Trello and add comments or any other attributes, just like if you were inside of Jira. Simply close it, and you're back in your Trello board.

So why would I do this?

If this looks cool but you're not sure how do use it, don't worry—I've got a few ideas for you 😉

  •  Keep track of your personal tasks in a Trello board (combine your Jira tasks with other tasks that you still need to do, but might not add to a Jira project. Like booking flights, or checking your email, or preparing a project.)
  • Create your own custom views of your Jira issues without needing to build anything out in Jira
  • Share a subset of Jira issues with the folks it concerns. Ie, have marketers on your team who work in Trello and need to know about features making it into the next release but they don't use Jira? 🎉
  • Stop the arguments about Trello vs Jira and use both : )

So what do you think?

Trello should be the front end for Jira

This is something I've heard many times before and now it can be.  Jira is the best at what it does but definitely isn't for everyone. This allows those who choose Trello but work within an organisation that uses Jira to have the best of both worlds.

I'm not one of them, Trello is all the productivity tool I need in my life 😬
