New Enhancements in Issue Navigator: Inline Issue Creation and Scrolling!

👋 Hi Jira community!

I'm Amira, a Product Manager in Jira Cloud. I’d love to share two exciting updates to make your experience in the issue navigator easier than ever: Inline issue creation and Scrolling!

✨ What's New?

1. Inline Issue Creation

Now, adding a new issue is super quick! With Inline issue creation, you can add issues directly from the issue navigator without switching views or losing context. Just select + Create at the end of the list, type in a Summary, and create—your new issue will pop right into your list instantly! Perfect for capturing tasks on the go.

2. Scrolling

Say goodbye to page limits and hello to scrolling! Now issues load automatically as you scroll, no need to select individual pages to find what you need. This will be ideal if you are managing large lists that need a smooth, uninterrupted navigation experience.

🔥 That's not all!

Right now, inline issue creation is live in the project issue navigator, and scrolling is available in both the project and global issue navigators. We’re working to bring even more enhancements soon—stay tuned!

Great outcome after a while in backlog!  Really good features of inline create too.

Thanks @Amira Badran

The List view and the project issue navigator are becoming more and more similar. May I know if both of project issue navigator and List view will exist in the future?

Thanks,

YY Bro

Thank you @YY Brother for your question! Both the List view and project issue navigator are available as we work to create a consistent experience across them. We’re evaluating their long-term strategy to ensure they meet user needs and will share updates as plans evolve. Your feedback is invaluable, so feel free to share any additional thoughts!

Thanks @Amira Badran - these seem to be great updates.

However, is it possible for use to choose between lazy loading and the paginated view - perhaps as some personal setting? Reason I ask is because i have seen both the lazy loading and the paginated version randomly on one of my filters and I kind of prefer pagination as I sometimes use ctrl + f to do a quick find on a page and if lazy loading is in place, this does not work.

I created this post just last week https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/issue-navigator-pagination-OR-lazy-loading/qaq-p/2915115

I would also like some attention on https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-83321 please

But for this, great on the improvements. Only thing I would like is option to choose.

Thank you

Yatish

Thank you @Yatish Madhav for your question! There won’t be an option to switch between infinite scrolling and pagination. The move to infinite scrolling is key to enabling future exciting enhancements in the issue navigator and creating a more seamless experience.

For quick searches, we recommend using Jira’s built-in filtering functionality. We appreciate your feedback, feel free to share any additional thoughts with us!

Thanks @Amira Badran  I do love Jira's built in filtering ... but on top of that, using ctrl f is much much quicker in finding something based on summary or a quick find on a specific status or name, etc ...

Oh well. Will have to work around that somehow.

Thanks, though.

@Amira Badran Great news, thanks!

Can you please advise

1. Will it be possible to expect the "Apps" button in the project itself, without going to search for all issues? Now this "Apps" button is only available in filters.

2. We are really looking forward to a resolution to the request JRACLOUD-25493, exporting 1000+ issues in automatic mode is still a problem.

@Petr AST thank you for your questions!

  1. Currently, the "Apps" button is only available in Global Issue Navigator. However, I understand how valuable this functionality could be. I’d recommend raising this suggestion in Jira Cloud Portal so our team can track and evaluate the demand for it.
  2. This request is actively under consideration. Recently, we rearchitected CSV exports to work asynchronously to alleviate timeout issues, and we’re now investigating the possibility of expanding the limit beyond 1000 issues. Please keep an eye on the  JRACLOUD-25493 for updates and progress.

Last week I noticed I was able to go back to the old view for a while and I realised it was soooo much nicer to use. It sometimes feels like when changes are made, there's a focus on snappiness and seamlessness at the expense of usability. For someone like me who is constantly creating bug and task tickets, it's more convenient to keep a tab open with the ticket creation page, and access filters and existing issues in a separate tab, so the inline ticket creation isn't very helpful for me.

I also like being able to jump straight to a page in the filter, e.g. I know the set of tasks I created 2 weeks ago will all be together on page 5, so I can jump straight to them without scrolling through every other ticket created since then. I could do this with filters too, but that's slightly more effort, especially if it's a rough guess to the timespan I'm looking for. In the old view it's usually a maximum of 3 clicks to find what I'm looking for.

A third valuable feature of the "old view" which was lost in the new view is showing the filter's name in the browser tab, it now shows the selected ticket's title (unless you're in the list view). So if I have a dozen tabs open, and 6 of them are Jira tabs, in the old view I can see at a glance which tab's my "All tickets" list, which one's the "Resolved bugs to close" list, and which ones are individual issues I'm currently focusing on. In the new view, if I have e.g. BUG-1234 open in a tab, and that same bug highlighted in a filter, both tabs look identical, so I actually have to click through each tab to find what I'm looking for. It sounds like a small thing, but it has noticeably streamlined my workflow not having to click through a bunch of tabs trying to find the filter I was looking at earlier. Any chance this could return for the new updates?

Lastly, I prefer in the old view how it doesn't start searching until I confirm my search terms.

Okay thank you for reading my thoughts! I'm holding out til I'm forced to use the new view, I hope my gripes will be considered for improvements :)

I'm feeling mixed about this update. It would be beneficial to have the option to toggle between automatic loading and the page view for issues. I found the page view more comfortable and user-friendly when searching for issues. Additionally, automatic loading can make the page very laggy, which isn't ideal for those of us who rely on Jira daily for our jobs. I believe this change may not be the best enhancement, and I'm not alone in this sentiment. I hope we can see a reversal of this in the next update, as it would certainly make things easier for many of us. I apologize if this isn't the reaction the Atlassian Team was expecting, but I felt it was important to share my and most of my colleagues' honest feelings about these significant changes to the database.

The new infinite page interface damages productivity by causing severe lag on machines, and the lack of any page grouping makes navigating the page difficult. It is simply not feasible to load in thousands of issues in one page and have it perform at an acceptable level. Even on pages with a few amount of issues (<50) it still performs worse than before the update. Infinite scrolling is not a bad idea but it at the very least needs to be smooth and perform at roughly the same level as pagination did. I suggest a toggle to switch between the two.

Thank you everyone for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about the issues you're  facing with the new scrolling feature. We understand how important smooth performance and easy navigation are, and fixing these concerns is our team's top priority.

While we can’t provide an option to switch back to pagination, we’re working hard to optimise the current experience to improve performance and usability.

We appreciate your patience as we make these updates and value your input. Please let us know if you have any further feedback.

I forgot to mention one other thing I preferred in the old issue view: the issues in the list take up less space, so I can see more on-screen at once. In the new view, there is a lot of white space between each issue in the list. Would it be possible to have something like the Activity Stream on the Dashboard, where you can choose to view them in a more compact list?

I'm sticking with the old view for as long as I can, because it still has the useful features I mentioned above :) Unfortunately the focus on a "smoother experience" in the new view, at the expense of usability, has had a noticeable negative impact on my productivity.

(Old view has 1. Better use of space to show more information at once, 2. quicker access to things in a filter by clicking the page numbers, 3. shows filter name on the browser tab, 4. waits for me to confirm search terms before doing anything. In-line ticket creation may be useful for some but has no use for me)
