Five Types of Reports a Product Owner Needs

An Agile Product Owner takes on several roles in a Scrum team to maximize the value of the products created. Tracking agile metrics that directly impact the progress of the project is a key responsibility of Product Owners. They are also solely responsible for showing value to the management and stakeholders who often do not have the time to check in daily.

To achieve both these objectives, Products Owners need reports that:

  1. Give them a deep analysis of the project to manage capacity, risks and monitor progress against goals and targets.

  2. Provide stakeholders with a quick snapshot of the project status.

Most Agile teams use Jira for effective project management. In addition, there are many reporting and time tracking apps that build seamlessly on top of Jira that help Scrum teams and Product Owners track time and velocity and give real-time insights for better team decisions.

These are the 5 types of reports a Product Owner needs for increased visibility.

Sprint Burndown

The Sprint Burndown defines the Scrum team's daily progress based on the Story Points agreed on during the Sprint Planning. It is an effective report that shows the team's progress towards the Sprint Goal. When used correctly and in conjunction with Jira custom reporting apps, it provides near real-time tracking on the Sprint progress.

Sprint Velocity Graph

The Sprint Velocity is an average of the number of Story Points a Scrum team can accomplish in a Sprint, based on the amount of work the Scrum team has completed in previous sprints.

Detailed reports provided by Jira custom time-tracking apps enable Product Owners to gain invaluable insights into the team's capacity vis-a-vis the sum of Story Points, identify risks and maximize the Scrum team's productivity to increase velocity over time.

 Team Capacity

To maximize the Scrum team's value, the Product Owner must ensure that everyone is working to optimal capacity. Detailed timesheets take away the guesswork from planning team capacity.

Product Owners can make the most of Jira time tracking reports by viewing real-time work distribution and capacity to identify roadblocks well in time, plan resources and ensure maximum productivity and efficiency.

 Epic and Release Burndown Charts

These charts give an accurate real-time representation of the amount of work completed, work left, the rate of completion, and the amount of work the Scrum team needs to complete each day to deliver a given scope.

 Sprint Report

The Sprint Report helps Product Owners understand the team's performance across completed and active sprints. In addition, the report lists issues, tasks and their status in each Sprint, and issues that were reprioritized or removed from the Sprint.

While the Sprint Report graph looks quite similar to the Burndown Chart, the Sprint Report tracks the amount of work remaining versus time.

These reports give a bigger picture, help keep ‘Scope Creep’ under control, and are important for future Sprint Retrospectives and planning effective Sprints.

Agile Reporting Done Right

The Jira ecosystem has robust time tracking and reporting apps that allow Product Owners to generate comprehensive and customized Jira time tracking reports within minutes.

Product Owners can get a complete overview of projects, sprints, and tickets in Jira, identify relationships between users, epics, projects, and logged hours and visualize complex connections between tickets across a large project.

These visual and detailed reports offer a single source of truth, empowering Product Owners to plan successful Sprints in the future, maximizing product value, and increasing transparency between the Scrum Team and the stakeholders.
