Slack Integration with Jira Work Management

Brian Taylor October 19, 2023

With Slack in the cloud, is there a way to capture the whole thread to include all of the replies when creating a ticket?

Hi @Brian Taylor

Which Slack app are you asking about?

  • For Jira Cloud, I'm pretty confident the answer is that it isn't possible.
    • The Jira Cloud app allows you to create an issue from a Slack message, but it doesn't capture the message or thread contents. It simply links back to the message in the description.
    • It does post a message in thread indicating that an issue was created from this message.
  • With Atlassian Assist, any Request created from the original Thread message will include the entire thread as comments.
    • The threaded message will be added as individual comments, spawning multiple notifications on the new issue.
    • If you raise a request using one of the messages in the thread, it will use that message as summary and the first comment, but then add the entire thread as separate comments (it gets a little weird).
    • In both cases though, it doesn't turn the Slack message into a support thread - there is no indication in Slack that a Request was created from an issue.
  • Using Integration+ from Appfire, you will be given the option to select messages from the Thread to add as comments after the issue is created.
    • These messages will be added as a single comment on the issue.
  • Using HelpDesk+ from Appfire, you will be given the option to capture messages sent in Thread as comments on the new Request.
    • As with Integration+, the Threaded messages will be added as a single comment on the new Request.
    • The Slack Thread will also be turned into a Support Thread, meaning it will begin syncing comments from Jira to Slack and messages from Slack to Jira. You can then click a button to mark a thread private to move this sync process to a DM if you need.

Hopefully that answers your question! Let me know if I didn't catch the app you were asking about.

Cheers,
Evn

Ah, I should have caught that you asked about Jira Work Management - so ignore everything I said about Atlassian Assist. It only supports Jira Service Management projects. The rest all applies though.
