Request for Configuration Backup

Jett Salvador January 24, 2024

It is possible to request a configuration backup file from Atlassian? I forgot to do a backup several weeks ago and I need to rollback my configurations. I'm thinking if Atlassian can provide me a backup configuration file that I can use to rollback changes?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Jett Salvador

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I am part of Revyz.

Unfortunately it is the customers responsibility to take backups of their Atlassian sites - Please reference the Cloud Security Shared Responsibilities

With regards to your specific question -

"Atlassian performs daily database backup right? and they don't share this backup to their clients"

Yes Atlassian does take backups at the infra / system level, reverting back specific changes at the site level is not supported by them - reference the Security Practices followed by Atlassian.

"We do not use these backups to revert customer-initiated destructive changes, such as fields overwritten using scripts, or deleted issues, projects, or sites. To avoid data loss, we recommend making regular backups"

BTW - please note the shared responsibility model that Atlassian has, is not unique, it is very similar to what other SaaS companies such as Microsoft or Salesforce do.

To help manage your backups, we at Revyz have built the Revyz Data Manager for Jira

Which will help you with:

  • Manage | Configuration Management | example use case sandbox to prod
  • Protect | Backup & Restore | all Jira project types (JSW, JSM etc.. including JSM Assets)
  • Analyze | Jira site analytics for the Administrator
  • Optimize | Jira site optimization | example use cleanup of jira site, easily delete unwanted configuration

Let me give an example of the problem you have highlighted - "You want to revert back your configuration" to what existed a few days or weeks ago.

Using the Revyz Data Manager for Jira you can do the following:

  1. Investigate what changed
  2. Rollback in a granular manner specific configuration objects
  3. Compare configuration across sites (sandbox <> production)
  4. Copy / Clone configuration from one site to another (sandbox <> production)

Reference screenshot below:

image.png

Step -1: I am comparing configuration of our site from Jan 8 2024 with Jan 29 2024

The diff on the configuration helps me quickly identify what changed - as an example I see that the customer field which was present in the site on Jan 8th has been deleted in the Jan 29th version of the configuration.

Step -2: I can then review dependencies of specific objects as an example if I select a Screen Scheme - we will identify all the dependent objects affected or needed such as screens, fields etc..

Step - 3: We can then granularly rollback or clone the specific objects of interest

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Vish

Hi @Jett Salvador ,

Indeed, Atlassian performs a backup for disaster recovery, and individual clients don't get access to it.

Thank you for this information @marc -Collabello--Phase Locked- .
