I recently encountered a situation where a Jira project critical to our operations was accidentally deleted. This project contained significant amounts of data and work that are essential to our team's ongoing tasks. I'm reaching out to seek advice and any possible steps I can take to recover this lost project.

  1. Are there any specific steps I can follow to recover a deleted project within Jira?
  2. Does Jira offer a grace period during which deleted projects can be restored?
  3. Is there a way to access backups that may contain the deleted project's data, and if so, how can I restore from these backups?
  4. Would contacting Atlassian Support directly help in this situation, and if yes, what information should I provide to expedite the process?

Any guidance, advice, or steps you can share would be greatly appreciated. This project is critical to our team, and any help in recovering it would be invaluable.

Hello @Manuel Gualda  and welcome to the Atlassian Community!

As it has already been mentioned, if you have an access of a Jira admin or a project admin, you can try to restore your data from a trash within 60 days before it is permanently deleted.

Hovewer, as a proactive secuirty measure you can try to back up your Jira data with automated scheduled backup tool, like GitProtect. In this case, no data is going to be lost, and you can recover it fast using the backup provider's restore and Disaster Recovery options.

Learn more about GitProtect on Atlassian: Marketplace: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1228719/gitprotect-io-backups-for-jira-cloud?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

If you are an admin and on Cloud, go to Admin -> Projects and look to the left for "trash".  Projects are put in there when you click and confirm delete, and you can recover them from there.  They will expire, and vanish, but you have 60 days I believe.

If they are not in there, then the trash has been emptied out, and to answer questions 3 and 4 - Atlassian backups are intended for recovering from a disaster, they're not individual system backups.  So unless you took your own backup, no, there's no way to recover the project.

Hi @Manuel Gualda

I guess that you are using cloud instance.

In Cloud deleted projects will be in trash for next 60 days. During this time you can restore it. Please check docs:

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/restore-a-project-from-trash/

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-service-management-cloud/docs/trash-and-restore-a-project/

Seba
