How do I link subtasks to other issues on the same board?

You can link any issue to another by editing either of them and using "link issue" from the options menu, then selecting a link type and the other issue for the other end of the link.

But I may not have picked the right thing when I read "link" - the issue link function is the instinctive answer, but you might not mean that.  If I have got it wrong, could you describe more of what you expect a "link" to do in this question?
