Is it possible to build a sprint with with issues from both Jira Work Management and Jira Software?

Jeremy Nydegger April 15, 2024

Apologies in advance if this has been addressed... I've searched and couldn't find a suitable answer.  Is it possible to pull issues from Jira Work Management into a sprint created in Jira Software? For instance, if business users are using Jira Work Management for their project backlog but have a work request towards a group in I.T. working in Sprints, is it possible to collaborate in the Work Management project but pull those I.T. specific tasks into a sprint created in Jira Software? Or would we need to work in both tools for visibility? (Assuming the Project was already created and underway within Jira Work Management from initiation).

Good afternoon @Jeremy Nydegger

To achieve the collaboration you're looking for:

  1. Project Structure and Permissions: Ensure that both your Jira Software project and your Jira Work Management project are set up properly. Make sure that permissions allow the necessary teams to access and collaborate across projects.

  2. Linking Issues Between Projects:

    • Issue Links: In Jira, you can link issues between different projects. For example, a user can create a task in Jira Work Management and link it to a related task in the Jira Software project.
    • Creating Sub-Tasks: Users can create sub-tasks or linked issues in the Software project directly from their Jira Work Management tasks. This helps to keep related work items connected across projects.
  3. Utilizing Boards and Sprints:

    • Shared Board: Consider setting up a shared board that includes tasks from both projects. This can provide visibility across teams.
    • Sprint Planning: When planning sprints in Jira Software, you can include tasks from the linked Jira Work Management issues in your sprint backlog.
  4. Workflow and Visibility:

    • Ensure that both teams understand the workflows and processes used in each project. This includes how tasks move through different statuses and who is responsible for what.
    • Use dashboards and reports in Jira to provide visibility into work across projects. This can help both teams track progress and dependencies

Thank you @Collista Lewingdon ; The specific note about Sprint Planning was specifically what I wanted to confirm.  Appreciate the quick response!
