I want to change the workflow of a task but not the workflow of the project. How?

I have a project with large tasks that go through multiple categories of workflows.  I am adding sub-tasks to these issues and only want them to be categorized as To Do, In Progress, or Done.  How do I do that in Jira Work Management.  It is not a Jira Software project we are using it to manage internal sales.

Hello @Vanessa Scherstrom

Is your project a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project? That information will display at the bottom of the navigation panel on the left.

If it is a Team Managed project, then the Project Administrator can customize the project so that the Subtasks have a different workflow than the other issue types.

If it is a Company Managed project, then only a Jira Administrator can customize the project so that the Subtasks have a different workflow than the other issue types.

It is a team-managed project. I am in project settings, but I don't see where in the issues types that I can change an individual issue types's workflow.  Edit workflow just takes me to the overall project's workflow.  This is not a kanban or scrum board.  Just a work management template.  We are tracking the overall client progress, and using the preset categories New, Follow-up, Contract Sent, Negotiation, Close Won, Close Lost.  When I add issue type "Client" I would like to add child issues sub-tasks that only have categories To Do, In Progress, Done.  Can that be done in Jira Work management?

Thanks for you help :)

I used the template "Sales Pipeline" if that helps.  Thanks again Trudy!

Hello Vanessa,

In Project Settings > Issues, click on the Subtask issue type. Then click Edit Workflow.

Change the workflow to what you want for Subtasks.

When you are ready to save the changes click the Update Workflow button.

You will receive a screen asking to which issue types you want the changes applied. Remove all the issue types except Subtask.

That will result in the modified workflow being applied only to Subtasks.

If you already have subtasks that are assigned to the original Statuses you will receive a screen to map those statuses to the statuses available in the modified workflow.

Note that Team Managed projects support only one Subtask issue type, so the change will apply to all Subtasks in the project.
