Enforce a standard column order in Business processes

Brendan Clough February 9, 2022

Hi there,

Is there a way in the Board view to enforce a particular order to the columns within the board? According to this document the order is very much driven by the user, and there is no way to either clear a users settings in this regard (to redefault the view) or enforce respecting a particular column order.

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-work-management/docs/workflows-and-statuses-for-the-board/

Any questions let me know and thanks in advance all!

Kind regards,

Brendan

Hi Brendan,

You can control order of the way cards move through the board by using transitions directly between the statuses in the workflow.

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. It's less the card movement and rather the column order. Seems as for the majority of users the column order is mixed up (pretty sure it's a reused workflow) and it's causing confusion amongst out users, so was hoping we could reset it to the current transition order thereby removing the confusion.

Kind regards,
B

The view of the columns is unique to each user right now, so each person will need to drag the columns into the correct order. There is no standard order you can do as an admin. Hopefully that will be changed at some point soon.

Hi @Brendan Clough

just want to ask the purpose/your requirement behind the question?

there is no change in the process neither the view for anyone else (as your link says the order of the columns only changes for the particular user).
As a user changes his/her view/column order I would say there is a special need for that particular user to do so.

As I said just trying to understand the purpose behind the question in order to tackle the problem and find a fullfilling solution.

Best

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the question. Reason being is that currently we are using a workflow and a number of our users are seeing the columns in the wrong-order and I was hoping that we could try and reset the order to match the workflow rather than our staff all manually changing the workflow themselves manually for it to match the transition order.

Kind regards,

You can restrict who can create and admin projects thereby controlling the boards. That does sort of defeat the purpose of allowing teams to work the way want.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the reply. It's a Work Management/ Business process/ project so it's not dependant on a user having a Administration role in whether they can move the order of columns.

The issue for us is that it seems as for the majority of users the column order is mixed up (pretty sure it's a reused workflow) and it's causing confusion amongst out users, so was hoping we could reset it to the current transition order thereby removing the confusion.

Kind regards,

B

With a business project if you are using the default board then everyone should see the very same layout. Can you explain “column order mixed up”. Maybe some screenshots would help?
