Auto-create subtasks when status transition is automated

Hi all,

I want to automate the following:

  • Subtasks for each status
  • When all subtasks are done in their respective status, I want the task to move to the next status -- where it will subsequently be auto-populated with more subtasks

Building subtasks per status is easy enough, as well as subtasks done --> parent task transition. But when I automate the subtasks = done --> change parent task, the subtasks for the new status don't auto-populate... only when I manually transition the status.

Attempt 1:

  • When --> transition --> to [particular status]
  • Then --> create subtasks

Attempt 2:

  • When --> value change in status
  • If status equals [particular status]
  • Then --> create subtasks

Obviously I'm thinking too simply, but I'm newer to Jira (a Notion gal at heart). Please help!

Hello @Leanne Przybylowski

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

In the rules you have setup for creating subtasks based on the status of the parent task changing, check the Rule Details page.

There is a box on that page you need to un-check, so that the subtask creation rules can be triggered by another rule having changed the status of the parent issue.
