What is the correct level to pitch a milestone at? Epic? Task? Feature?

All,

I am currently starting to populate Jira and implementing BigPicture, I was wondering what the correct level to tag a milestone as. At the moment I have a number tagged as tasks and stories, however, I am not sure if this is correct?

If anyone could advise on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Hi @Alasdair McKie

The milestone level depends on what you would like to achieve. Meanwhile, waiting for Project Managers to share their practices, I would like to give you some technical tips regarding milestones in BigPicture.

In BigPicture, you can convert a Jira issue into a milestone (represented as diamonds that do not have any duration). To convert a task to a milestone or vice versa, right-click on the selected task (on the task list) or use the ". . ." button in the vertical dialog:

You can synchronize Milestone information using the "Label" field. When you convert a task to a milestone, the app will create a #milestone label:

You can also use a Basic task instead of a Jira issue as a milestone. With basic tasks, there is no need to fill a dozen of Jira fields, just enter a name for your basic task. Basic tasks do not litter your Jira’s backlog; they stay within the BigPicture context. Here is a guide on when and how to use basic tasks.

Last, you can easily track Project milestones using the Infobar in the Gantt module. Navigate to the selected milestone by clicking on the "Target" icon next to the milestone on the list.

Just let me know, if you have more question :)
