What are the costs of hosting Jira Software plugins on the Atlassian Marketplace?

I want to create a plugin for Jira software and host it on Atlassian Marketplace for use by my organization (not intended for public use). I understand that I could use Connect or Forge to create Atlassian Apps, however, I am not sure about the costs involved in hosting these apps. I would like to know if costs are only incurred for using the Atlassian Cloud instances or also for using the Marketplace platform? Are there any additional costs for hosting/invoking Forge or Connect Apps?

Additionally, I would like to know if it is possible to create a Jira software plugin without using Connect or Forge, and list it on the Marketplace (for example, a web app hosted elsewhere)?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

There are no costs for listing and hosting an app on the marketplace beyond the expense of the human who has to spend some time putting the app on there, and maintaining the listing.

However, depending on the nature of the app, there are likely to be costs you incur because you have to host it.

Using Scriptrunner for Jira Cloud as an example, that is an app that (mainly) runs on Adaptavist servers and hooks into Jira.  Most of the bigger apps you can see in the marketplace do the same thing.  We have the cost of running all the servers that SR runs on.

You do not have to use Connect or Forge to create Jira apps that run outside Atlassian servers, and you can list them in the marketplace if you do create systems that talk to Atlassian stuff without being a plugin.  As long as it has something to do with an Atlassian application, it can be listed on the Atlassian marketplace.  Most of the apps listed that I've seen are mobile apps that talk to Jira without being a plugin, and they list the Android or Apple marketplace entries for the installs.

Thanks for the reply! That really clears up a lot.

Just wondering about one more thing, if I were to create a plugin using Atlassian Connect, do I also have the option of hosting the app on an Atlassian Cloud Instance or can I only self host it on other cloud services?

Also, if I make a Jira plugin using Forge or Connect, can I make the plugin private for my organization's domain or do I have to make it publicly accessible?

It depends on how the plugin works as to where you host it.

You can make an app private on the marketplace - you effectively say "only show this to people coming from the 'find new apps' on Cloud domain xyz.atlassian.net"
