Sprint metrics - automated dashboard

dirk November 29, 2020

Hi there

I'm looking to monitor the 3 metrics below across 10 Scrum teams:

  • Number of User Stories open at a time per Sprint
  • Number of incomplete User Stories per Sprint
  • % of Story points complete at Sprint end

Ideally this should be automated into a Dashboard view. And generate a rolling average for each metric for each Scrum team.

Any suggestions on filters, dashboard gadgets, and generally the best approach?

Thanks

Hi @dirk  -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I do not believe you can get any of those as a plain number value (or rolling average value) with out of the box Jira.  There are built-in reports and charts from which you could view and gather the information.

If you want those specific measures, you could:

  • Investigate reporting options in marketplace for purchase,
  • Use the Excel plug-in (or Google sheets) to pull data regularly and build your own reports,
  • Use the REST API to pull the data into another reporting tool, or
  • Add some custom fields or properties and use automation rules to gather the information and sprint event triggers.

If for the "Number of User Stories open at a time per Sprint" you mean the WIP level over time, you can see that on a Cumulative Flow Diagram (built-in chart) by adding all of the team's information to a single, Classic project Kanban board.  Remember to use that board as view-only (no updates) if you try that route.

Best regards,

Bill

Hi @dirk

We provide a commercial app called Dashboard Hub for Jira. This app allows you to easily create dashboards with pre-defined templates, integrations with other Jira instances, Confluence, Bitbucket, Opsgenie, Insight, Statuspage, +60 gadgets and custom charts. Your three metrics could be created with one of our gadgets called JQL search:

And you can share your dashboards, check it out here (2nd slide). Hope this helps!

Hi Dirk,

I'm new to the community with an off the shelf tool that can provide what you're looking for.  How did you get on with this?

Umano.tech is an agile analytics tool for sprint delivery teams.  All you need is your Jira API Token and you're up and running with your live automated sprint reporting.  We're in beta, so it's free.  Get started here:

Cheers!

Chris

BTW, if you want additional isights into your Review process, connect your Bitbucket for insights into your team's review practices, and brings observability to speed, size and progress of your pull requests.  You'll see how when you're onboarding.
