Set Default Comment Visibility to a Restricted Group

We're looking to change the default comment visibility to a specific group instead of All Users in our JIRA Cloud instance.

Is there a way to handle this in JIRA settings?

Hi @Jeff Barrett ,

Unfortunately there is no way to restrict viewing comments on issues to specific user groups - if they have permission to view the issue, then they will be able to see the comments.

You can set security levels at an issue-level to restrict who sees specific issues/sets of issues, and you can restrict users from viewing issues within a project using the Browser Projects permission.

Hope this helps!

@Laura Holton _ACE Rotterdam_  thank you for your response!  At the moment we have some user groups set up and we are able to manually adjust the comment visibility:

By default comments are set to be viewable by All Users:

What I'm looking to achieve is adjusting JIRA to have comments default to being visible by a specific User Group instead of All Users.  The goal here is to ensure that comments default to only being visible by users in my company to ensure 3rd party users (clients, other vendors) cannot see our comments by default.

Thank you so much for your help!

@Jeff Barrett

I see what you mean now, there is a feature request suggesting the implementation of this ability, which is currently in the 'gathering interest' phase. This would be your only option for Jira Cloud, so it's worth voting for the issue to show your interest and you can watch the issue if you'd like updates on it's progress.

If you had Jira server, you could edit your Jira Program files to set this option as default by following the steps HERE.

Hope this info is helpful!
