You can read about DevOps culture which tends to make releases as fast as possible. There is a good point in it since the less features are in the release the easier it is to install the release. But frequent releases require a well-built developing process which is not as easy as it seems. That is why you should choose release duration according to your current development process.
I think the most important document is Release notes. All other documents are less important. But again it is up to your process.
I would advise you to read more about Agile and DevOps.
