Recommendation for Skills Inventory add-on for Jira

April Anderson March 20, 2023

Hi - looking for recommendations for an add-on in Jira to provide the following for our teams regarding skills:

  • We want the ability to manage the list of skills and make them available for the teams (Scrum Master)  to select from the list
  • Ability to select skill level proficiency for each skill (i.e. novice, proficient, expert)
  • Ability to search for a Team Member on a certain skill
  • Ability to see what that Team Member is currently working on and any upcoming work
  • Ability to export a list that includes Team Members and skills they have
  • Budget-friendly :)

Any recommendations?

Thank you!

Hi @habib rahman - can you please provide links to the add-ons you listed in your answer? I cannot find any that match those names.

Also, do you have direct experience with any of those add-ons?

@April Anderson maybe a better option would be to explore the Atlassian Marketplace yourself and look at the descriptions and reviews there. Here is a link to the marketplace filtering for Jira Cloud and the keyword "skills":

Hi @April Anderson , no idea how our team missed this question, but Skills for Jira does exactly what you are looking for.

We want the ability to manage the list of skills and make them available for the teams (Scrum Master)  to select from the list

You can configure your own skill tree and even customize it on a project- or field- level. You can set skill requirements for your tasks and see all experts with matching skill set.

Ability to select skill level proficiency for each skill (i.e. novice, proficient, expert)

The default skill tree models proficiency levels as different skills within a common category (e.g. QA - Competent). In practice it's the simplest approach to manage and also allows you to choose whether you want your Senior employees work on Beginners' tasks.

Ability to search for a Team Member on a certain skill

Not only can you find people by a skill, you get a searchable and explorable graph where you can find people by a set of skills, compare skill sets of multiple people or a group and find people with skill gaps.

Ability to see what that Team Member is currently working on and any upcoming work

Again, not only can you see people's work in progress and upcoming tasks, you also get to configure work queues and let people pull their next best task with 1 click. They'll get the next most important task that they are qualified to work on from across the queues they have access to.

Ability to export a list that includes Team Members and skills they have

That's supported as well. You also get an API that you can use to access this data programmatically.

 Budget-friendly :)

Check Skills for Jira out and if you find that it works well for you, ping our Support team. We'll figure this out :)
