We are trying to provide our customer access to one of our Next -Gen Project. The question is, is this possible in next gen version of a project? I am aware that in the classic version, you can add an external user (customer) to a specific project. But I cannot find a way to do it in Next Gen Project.

I think you are facing issue in case:
When we change the assignee from Portfolio it will be reflected on JIRA. But now when we change assignee again from JIRA for the same story then it will not be reflecting on Portfolio after recalculating plan.
If YES then the solution is here:
For this we just go to the Members column of that story -> click on the member -> a menu get opened -> click on "Clear selected items" -> Click on "Apply" -> Now commit the changes
Now assignee will get changed.
Above process is feasible if number of items are less but this process might become lenghty If we do have many items.
