Question about migration

Leonardo February 17, 2020

We're looking into migrating from an on premise Jira to the SaaS version. Our on premise isn't that complex so the migration should be easy. We only use the Software and Service Desk packages and have up to 25 users.

Our company exists out of two different sections under a different trademark. This isn't reflected in the on premise database, but we'd like to have that separation in the SaaS version.

What would be a good approach to go from a CompanyXY database to a CompanyX  and CompanyY structure? Is that even possible or recommended during the migration phase? Or is it something that should/can be done after the migration?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your interest in migrating from server to cloud!

In general, we highly recommend reading through the following documentation to help set up your migration plan:
* Compare cloud migration methods
* Determine your Jira user migration strategy
* Plan your cloud migration
* FAQs about migrating to Jira Cloud
* Audit Apps for your Migration to Cloud
* Atlassian Access and cloud migrations

For your specific case, the decision to split or move everything together to Atlassian Cloud is ultimately up to your team based on the needs of your business. Unless there is a legal requirement to separate the company data, we typically recommend keeping work consolidated on one instance as much as possible to simplify billing, improve user experience, and enhance the opportunities for collaboration between teams.
* If you decide to keep everything together, you would follow the steps outlined above to move from ServerXY to CloudXY all together.
* If you decide to split, you would follow the steps outlined above to move ServerXY to CloudX and then again to CloudY. Once that is done you would go into CloudX to delete Y data, and vice versa.
* Keep in mind that merging instances once they're on cloud is non-trivial so please consider your long term needs when making the decision.

Please take your time to review the resources above and let us know if you have any further questions. Looking forward to your team's successful migration to the cloud!

All the best,
Carisa
