Query related to JIRA software migration from JIRA DC to JIRA Cloud

Hi,

We are going to migrate to JIRA Cloud in near future, so we have few general queries in order to do some effort/cost estimation -

1. JIRA Software Upgrade in JIRA Cloud -
- Who is responsible for the Upgrade of JIRA software in JIRA cloud?
- Can JIRA software upgrade be done manually by users?
- How do we take care of any custom plugin dependency during the upgrade to make sure it does not break?

2. JIRA Software License renewal in JIRA Cloud -
- Who is responsible for JIRA Software License renewal in JIRA Cloud?
- Can it be done manually by the user?

3. Custom Plugin License renewal in JIRA Cloud -
- Who is responsible for Custom Plugin License renewal in JIRA Cloud?
- Can it be done manually by the user?

4. JIRA Administration -
- What kind of JIRA administration task is no longer done by JIRA administrator when migrated from JIRA DC to JIRA Cloud?

5. Support from Atlassian for JIRA Cloud -
- We will use 2000 user license. What kind of extra/different support that we get from Atlassian team when we move from JIRA DC to JIRA Cloud for Enterprise level?

6. Cost of License -
- I want to know what is the cost difference for 2000 user Enterprise JIRA software license between JIRA Cloud and JIRA DC? it there a real cost benefit?

7. Technical Comparison -
- Where can i see the technical comparison for JIRA Software between JIRA Cloud and JIRA DC?

Hello @Anirudh Pratap Verma

I've tried to provide some answers to your questions:

1. JIRA Software Upgrade in JIRA Cloud -
- Who is responsible for the Upgrade of JIRA software in JIRA cloud?

Atlassian handles the upgrade of the Jira Cloud software.

- Can JIRA software upgrade be done manually by users?

If you get the Premium or Enterprise subscription you can enable Release Tracks, but otherwise, no, the subscribers do not manage the software upgrades.

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-articles/Using-Sandbox-amp-Release-tracks-in-Cloud-Premium/ba-p/1538255

https://support.atlassian.com/organization-administration/docs/manage-product-release-tracks/

- How do we take care of any custom plugin dependency during the upgrade to make sure it does not break?

Can you expand on the above question?

2. JIRA Software License renewal in JIRA Cloud -
- Who is responsible for JIRA Software License renewal in JIRA Cloud?

- Can it be done manually by the user?

This depends on your billing plan/licensing contract. Billing can be handled automatically by entering credit card information, or you may have a contract to pay based on invoicing.

3. Custom Plugin License renewal in JIRA Cloud -
- Who is responsible for Custom Plugin License renewal in JIRA Cloud?
- Can it be done manually by the user?

This can be handled the same as the Jira Cloud license itself. If you enter credit card information into the Billing area in admin.atlassian.com then all the billing can be handled automatically.

Both of the above questions also depend on whether your work with a intermediate license procurement  organization or if you manage the acquisition of the licenses yourself.

4. JIRA Administration -
- What kind of JIRA administration task is no longer done by JIRA administrator when migrated from JIRA DC to JIRA Cloud?

Many of the system administration tasks are no longer needed - items related to optimizing the application based on settings on the server and optimizing the connection to the database. If you want a comprehensive list you would need to examine the Administration guides for both products.

5. Support from Atlassian for JIRA Cloud -
- We will use 2000 user license. What kind of extra/different support that we get from Atlassian team when we move from JIRA DC to JIRA Cloud for Enterprise level?

You can find information about the support offerings here:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/support/atlassian-support-offerings-193299636.html

6. Cost of License -
- I want to know what is the cost difference for 2000 user Enterprise JIRA software license between JIRA Cloud and JIRA DC? it there a real cost benefit?

You can find a cost calculator here:

https://www.atlassian.com/software/pricing-calculator

When determining cost benefit you can't simply compare the license cost for DC versus Cloud. You need to consider all the additional costs involved in the DC product - the cost of the servers to host it, the cost of the database you license to support it and the server for hosting that, the cost of the people hours to maintain the hardware and networking and software upgrades, etc.

7. Technical Comparison -
- Where can i see the technical comparison for JIRA Software between JIRA Cloud and JIRA DC?

What exactly are you looking for? There are many resources that talk about the differences between Jira DC and Jira Cloud.

Hi @Trudy Claspill ,

first of all thanks alot for anwering my questions. Please see my comments/queries in underlined text for below two points.

1. JIRA Software Upgrade in JIRA Cloud -

Atlassian handles the upgrade of the Jira Cloud software.

We will take enterprise solution, How do you deal with the issues observed/reported in Sandbox by any customer so that we dont see them when release is moved in PROD? Or we just need to live with the issues as release wont be delayed?

- How do we take care of any custom plugin dependency during the upgrade to make sure it does not break?

Can you expand on the above question?

We have created a custom plugin in java and installed it as plugin to support few other features on Atlassian plugin. This kind of act as a wrapper for plugin. Now whenever Atlassian plugin is modified, we also modify custom plugin accordingly to support it.

Therefore we want to know how we can handle this kind of custom plugin JIRA cloud?

7. Technical Comparison -
- Where can i see the technical comparison for JIRA Software between JIRA Cloud and JIRA DC?

What exactly are you looking for? There are many resources that talk about the differences between Jira DC and Jira Cloud.

- We have user authentication setup though an app Okta. For doing this setup few files are placed on on server along with little bit of customization in files. How we can accommodate this when moving to JIRA Cloud?

- We have a shared drive where we keep the JIRA data like attachments and scripts and icons etc. which is in TBs (size). How do we this manage date when we move to JIRA cloud and is it charged based on size?

- We have our backup jobs running on server. I hope the backup is taken care by JIRA cloud but what is the strategy, how is it done?

- How can we ensure that our customer data privacy is maintained?

We will take enterprise solution, How do you deal with the issues observed/reported in Sandbox by any customer so that we dont see them when release is moved in PROD? Or we just need to live with the issues as release wont be delayed?

Sandbox and Release Tracks are separate features.

A Sandbox is where you test changes that you make to a copy of your Jira instance. Such changes might include new automation rules, changes to configurations, and addition (or removal) of third party apps.

Release Tracks allow you to delay the roll out of changes in Jira Cloud that are being deployed by Atlassian. Without Release Tracks, Atlassian is rolling out changes continuously to Jira Cloud instances. With Release Tracks you can elect to delay the roll out of changes so that they come to your instance in a bundle on the second Tuesday of every month.

I don't have any experience with app development, so I have no guidance to offer on this question.

- We have user authentication setup though an app Okta. For doing this setup few files are placed on on server along with little bit of customization in files. How we can accommodate this when moving to JIRA Cloud?

You can set up an IDP to manage Atlassian Cloud accounts that are part of your domain. Take a look at these documents:

https://www.atlassian.com/software/access/guide/organizations-domain-claim#how-domain-verification-works

https://support.atlassian.com/security-and-access-policies/docs/understand-atlassian-access/

https://support.atlassian.com/provisioning-users/resources/

- We have a shared drive where we keep the JIRA data like attachments and scripts and icons etc. which is in TBs (size). How do we this manage date when we move to JIRA cloud and is it charged based on size?

If you opt for the Enterpise plan you have unlimited storage as per

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/explore-jira-cloud-plans/

Migrating TBs of data has its own challenges, depending on the migration strategy you use.

When you are starting to assess your instance for migration I strongly advise you to open a support case for the migration directly with Atlassian Support, and mention in that case the amount of stored data that you want to move. They will be able to give you guidance suitable to your specific situation.

- We have our backup jobs running on server. I hope the backup is taken care by JIRA cloud but what is the strategy, how is it done?

Jira Cloud does not manage backups for you in the sense that you can restore from a backup that Atlassian has taken. You need to have your own backup strategy. Take a look at this article:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/automate-backups-for-jira-cloud-779160659.html

There are third party apps that can assist you with this.

- How can we ensure that our customer data privacy is maintained?
