Paste images into Confluence, return later and they're broken

So, I'm writing user stories in Confluence and pasting images from clipboard into a table.  Immediately after pasting, the images are visible and look normal.  Then, I publish/save the page.  When I return to the story later, the image is broken.  What gives?  This is really frustrating.  Looking through all of the stories I've written, more than 70% are now broken.  

I'm in Chrome on MacOS.  I am copying images from Chrome (right click > copy image) into Confluence cloud.

I have the same issue with a twist. I've published and the images are visible then return (overnight) and they show up as a thumbnail and when you click on the thumbnail nothing is there. This is happening when I copy an image from one place or one page to another.

I have wasted soooo much time trying to resolve this.
