Original estimate field not required on issues in Team Managed Projects?

Is it possible to make it mandatory somehow? Jira doesn't let me set it as required because its a default field. I can't create custom fields that let me put a duration either. Is there a workaround?

I don't believe it's possible right now unfortunately in Team-managed.
