Kanban Board

Thi Tran May 19, 2020

I have a Kanban Project that im taking over. The project board is not up to date and is a quite messy to manage, as such, i would like to create a new project and start clean and move all the open issues over to the new project.

I have been added as an administrator but it seemed that i cant create a new project. Can somewhere direct me? Im able to do it with m personal Jira access that i use at home.

I then tried to create new boards under the existing project. But it seemed that when i create these new boards, all the issues from the original project board all got copied over. Is that how it should work?

I now wan to delete those issues on my new boards but im afraid it might delete the issues on the original project board.

Can you please advise what i can do?

Hello @Thi Tran ,

Thanks for reaching out and as a referance point Details on creating a new project can be seen in the following documentation:

And you noted having admin permissions, so if you do have global admin the option to create a project should be visable in either the Project Drop down in the top navigation bar here:

OR located in the manage Projects admin page that can be navigate to via  Settings >> Projects >> Projects (in the left navigation pane) >> Create Project .  like this:

If the options are not present then it means that you are not a member of a group that has the Global Administer Project permission, and you will need to be added to one of these groups as covered in:

Next you had a question on creating a board.   A Board will be created for a new project initially when you create a project based on the project template selected (i.e. Scrum or Kanban) So when you create a new Project the board will also be created automatically and configured for a single project with a board filter:

project = <PROJECT_KEY> order by rank asc

The Issues visible in a board are based on the boards filter, so if you wanted to create a board that contained issues from different projects or restricted to a subset of issues within a project to break up tasks between different teams you can either create a new board with a custom filter or modify an existing boards filter as desired,  Details on the settings can be seen in the following documents:

And the blog post "Learn how to create agile boards in Jira Software" gives some additional info and a really good breakdown on the differences between the board types and configurations avaliable.

Next you noted wanting to delete the issues on the secondary board you created,  It sounds more like you want to get rid of the duplicate Board not the actual issues correct?

If this is the case deleting the board will do this, noting the issues are independent from the board, the Board only collects the issues data into a View to manage the issues based on the Filter you define as discussed above.  So again if you delete a board the issues are not affected at all only the board view is removed including any reporting tied to that board, but if you delete the issues this is where the data lives and once deleted the data is gone.  Noting you can always recreate a board by creating a new board as described above.

To delete the board go to the "View all Boards" page and select the Three dot menu next to the board you want to delete and select delete:

Hi @Thi Tran  - Make sure you are a Jira Administrator and not just a Project Administrator. As a Jira Administrator you should be able to create Projects.

Are you trying to create a Classic Software Project or a Next-gen Project?
