Can you structure the backlog to display Epics with stories beneath and subtasks under stories versus having to click on the story to view subtasks?

Hi @marti smith

welcome to the community!

to the best of my knowledge, you can't do that in the backlog view. For a view like this, you need some extra tooling.

  • If you're on Jira Premium, you could have a look at Advanced Roadmaps. It will show your hierarchy just like you described, and IIRC should allow most if not all "backlog management" activities, like assigning a task to a sprint.
  • There's a number of hierarchy-focused apps on the Atlassian Marketplace. The depth and breadth of functionalities obviously depends on the app, but most should be able to show you the epic / story / subtask hierarchy. I myself happen to work on such an app; I'll add more details below.
  • There's also the new list view in Jira Work Management, but it doesn't work for Jira Software projects.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Hannes

To expand on the second point, this is how this would look in the app that my team is working on, JXL for Jira; TLDR: You can simply load your relevant issues into a sheet, enable the default issue hierarchy (that's just one click), and then start working on your issues much like you'd do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets - e.g., assign them to a sprint, do estimations, etc.:

As said above, there may be other apps that help with this, too. You may already know that you can trial any app for free for 1 month, and depending on the size of your size, it may be free forever. So if an app is an option for your, perhaps try a few and see which works best for you.

Any questions just let me know!
