Is there any proper way to automate backup of jira cloud?

Kunjan Giri April 16, 2024

After watching some of the discussions there seems different scripts in bitbucket for automated backup of jira and confluence. I tried two scripts atlascloud-backup and automatic-cloud-backup but didnt find a way to see the progress in automatic-cloud-backup and also the backup is not taken stream by stream. Is anyone using different method for large data backup of jira and confluence? we are currently using on-site backup and downloading the files in VM, Is there anyway to download the backup file straight to cloud storage or upload it stream by stream?

Hi @Kunjan Giri

Natively, suggestions on backup automation can be found on this help page: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/automate-backups-for-jira-cloud-779160659.html

Your options are...

There is a feature request for this though, check out CLOUD-6498

There also appears to be plans for a backup/restore API, and a new backup/restore experience for Admins - these are both mentions on the public roadmap, see here: https://www.atlassian.com/roadmap/cloud?status=future;comingSoon&search=backup

The other alternative is to use an App from the Marketplace; check out options such as...

Thanks @Stephen Wright _Elabor8_  for the information, we are currently doing manual backups.

Backups using Automation for Jira as this is only for on-site backups which helps a little.

I also tried js and python script, but the problem was it would not download stream by stream and the python script would not even show any progress which we are trying to download directly in the cloud. Have you tried any of these? or would you share on how you guys are implementing backup methods for Jira and confluence?

Thanks again

Hello @Kunjan Giri ,

You can try third-party backup tools to automate your backups. For example, with GitProtect backup & Disaster Recovery software for Bitbucket, Jira Cloud, JSW, JWM, and Confuence (soon) you can schedule and automate your backup policies, so that your backups are performed at a definite time. Moreover, you can easily control backup performance with email and Slack notifications and data-driven dashboards.

Among other features, I should mention the possibility to back up data to multiple storage locations - both local and cloud, as GitProtect is a multi-storage system, replication between storages, unlimited retention, central management console, ransomware protection, restore and Disaster Recovery technology - point-in-time restore, garnular recovery, restore to the same or a new account, restore to your local device, Cloud-to-Cloud/Cloud-to-local restore, etc.

You can try GitProtect backups for Jira on Atlassian Marketplace for free for 14 day: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1228719/gitprotect-io-backups-for-jira-cloud?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

If you want to learn more about GitProtect backup & DR software, book a live demo: https://calendly.com/d/3s9-n9z-pgc/gitprotect-live-demo?month=2024-04
