My company uses Atlassian Jira, but I had no part in configuring it or creating the workflow.     I find the user interface utterly baffling and confusing.

I can usually simply ignore it, and that makes me happy.    But every so often I have to log work or transition an "issue" to closed state.   I can never find the "close this story" button.    Sometimes I just get our project manager to do it for me.   That makes me happy too.    Where is the CLOSE IT button on an issue page?

Found it.    The dialog to CLOSE an issue is hidden behind a button that's labeled "OPEN Issue."
That's not just dumb, it's downright malicious.    You folks must really hate your users.

Hello @cls

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

What you found is the button that let's you change the status of the issue. That button will show an ordered list of status changes you can make for that issue. The name you see on that button is the first status change in the ordered list. By clicking on it you get to see the other status change options that are available.

What displays there is dependent on how your Jira Administrators have configured your environment.
