In the version listing you can see a list of releases, and next to that, the progress of those releases with number of stories/defects as 'To Do', 'In Progress' and 'Done' represented as colours on a bar.
We'd like to see the same thing for epics in a release. A list of epics with the progress of that epic according to the stories linked. So a list of 10 epics would show on one screen and you could easily see what proportion of stories were complete in each.
The Epic Report shows an overall chart for epics, but you can't drill into that level of detail for more than just one.
Good question, did you ever find an answer?
In the Backlog view open the Epics panel, on the left, to see a progress bar on every epic the team have stories under, without expanding the epic, where the green represents stories Done and the blue represents stories In Progress. Hovering over the bar displays the total count of stories.

With the current version of Jira, the Epics panel may be hidden. You can enable that panel with a switch in "Views settings". Also hovering over the different parts of the progress bar shows the number of stories in that state. And each Epic item can be expanded to show more details.

Answer from their support:
Hi Stuart,
Unfortunately, there is no such feature in JIRA to see the progress of Epics similar to 'Releases' in a scrum board.
You can see each Epic progress in the backlog "Backlog' section, but that doesn't show the completed/in progress/to do numbers.Backlog with Epics.png
