How can I automatically add and remove a user as a watcher?

Person A is getting way too many notifications as a watcher. They only want notifications for the following conditions:

- Person A is the assignee

- Person A is mentioned in the comments or summary

If they are not the assignee anymore, they do not want to be a watcher anymore. Is there a way to do this automatically?

Is there a way for Person A to be automatically added as a watcher when they become an assignee of a task, but if the assignee changes to someone else, person A is removed from the watchers' list?

Thank you!

Hi @Fiona King -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

That is possible, using an automation rule, with the Issue Assigned trigger and Manage Watchers action.

How would you know the person did not add themselves manually as a watcher, so the rule does not remove them incorrectly?

If you want to try to build your rule, please look at these sources to get started:

Kind regards,
Bill
