Does any document illistrates graphically how Issue Types, Workflows, Screens and Fields interact?

Lenny Smith July 12, 2018

Being new to JIRA Cloud (two months) we are reading as much as we can find to understand how the JIRA Cloud issue management system functions and how the various administrative features interact.  This is important so we can configure our instance to better meet our needs.  Does any form of operational overview exist that explains how these control features interact, connect and function as a whole inside the system (at a high level).  having such knowledge would be very helpful and will reduce our trial, error and error recovery process.  We are actually beginning to learn (by trial and error) how the solution works.  However this process could be accelerated immensely if there was any kind of overview of the correct (for our version) theory of operation of JIRA.  If anything exists that can help us understand how these things interact we would be further along.

Hi Lenny,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community.

I find this overview of Project screens, schemes and fields useful when explaining how it all works together. I also like Permissions overview, it gives a clear picture on how permissions works.

One of the specific setup challenges we are addressing with configuration is naming statuses and getting the buttons to appear properly on the create and inquiry screens.  We have googled a lot and read a lot and others seem to run into this as well.  We are working to understand how this works\is supposed to be set up.  As an example - we are trying to set a status to say "Third Party".  We can do that.  However getting one of the buttons to say that on the inquiry screen such that it can be clicked and change the status to "Third Party" is hit and miss.  We can easily set up the status, and understand how to set the work flow to permit the transitions, however we cannot find a consistent way to get the text for the status to show up in the button.  The button on the inquiry screen may say "In Progress" and when we click it - the status change to "Third Party".  It is this kind of configuration process that we are also looking for good documentation/tutorial/flow diagrams for.  The material you suggested is great but does not appear to address as far as I can see the configuration of the buttons on the screen and the interplay of the other configuration items (work flow, field config etc.) and how they impact one another.  For example - it appears sometimes from other posts we have to modify properties of the button to get button text captions to reflect desired text.  We are really satisfied with JIRA and appreciate the great community.  Your feedback is very much appreciated

Depending on how your workflow is configured you will either see the transition or the status as the button name. If you use a workflow that looks like this the buttons will have the same name as the status.

If your workflow look something like this the buttons will get the name from the transition instead of the destination status, so if the issue is in open status, you would see the buttons Resolve Issue, Close Issue and Start Progress.

If you copied a system workflow and modified it, you would also have to remove the properties on the transitions in order to change the names, see Renaming workflow transition buttons.

You can also configure the order of the transition buttons by adding the opsbar-sequence property key, see Customize how transitions appear, and if you are Jira Server you also have the option to change the number of buttons that is shown.

Excellent answer and helps to tie out these loose ends for us.  Also thank you for pointing to the relevant docs.
